Cleveland National Forest visitors can skip day-use fees at picnic areas and trailheads on two days this week, including this Saturday.
On Saturday, June 14, fees will be waived for National Get Outdoors Day, an annual event that encourages people to get outside.
Then, next Thursday, June 19, fees will be waived for Juneteenth, the federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S.
That means that visitors to San Diego County’s national forest won’t need to buy and display an Adventure when they park at a picnic site, designated trailhead or visitor center within the forest. The Adventure costs $5 a day or $30 a year.
The two days are part of the U.S. Forest Service’s “fee-free days” — five days of the year when the agency waives standard amenity fees at national forests and grasslands.
The fee-free days only waive fees for standard amenities, which do not include fees or costs associated with campground reservations, cabin rentals or special tours.
According to the Forest Service, at least 80% of day-use fees are reinvested at the collection site, which helps provide maintenance and services or pay for future improvements within the national forest.
The next fee-free days this year are National Public Lands Day on Sept. 27 and Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
